Journey to Jo’Burg – Beverley Naidoo
Posted By Laura on March 18, 2006
This book was written during the Apartheid in South Africa. It is the story of Naledi and her brother, Tiro, who make a trip to Johannesburg to tell their mother, who works for a rich, white woman, that their baby brother was ill with a fever. Journey to Jo’burg [amazon.co.uk] isn’t a book I had come across before and I read it because it is currently the class book in the school I am teaching in.
It is quite a sad, heart-wrenching book as it depicts what black people went through during the Apartheid, for example, separate buses and the need for their “passes”. Naidoo writes it beautifully and my class are really enjoying the book.
