Goodbye English Language

While searching other communities that I like, I came across this article from Slashdot [slashdot.org]. It is stating that New Zealand is allowing “text speak” on exams. Apparently, the NZ Qualification Authority is ‘confident that those grading papers will understand the meaning of students’ responses, even if they use phone/IM-style text-speak.’
What a load of rubbish. This is just simply preposterous. As a teacher, I am incensed that children / young adults will be able to use rubbish like “wot,” “u,” “2geva” and other such abominations to the English language in their exam papers. It just takes the proverbial.
Should I be teaching proper grammar and spelling in school if this is what it all comes down to? Jeez-o.
