FO: Branching Out

Pattern: Branching Out by Susan Pierce Lawrence, from knitty.com Spring 2005
Yarn: Rowan Tapestry, sh172, Antique
Needles: 5mm straights
This was an extremely random knit. The yarn was originally purchased for a claptotis but I didn’t have enough. And then when I bought some more the dye lots were completely different. I remembered that some people have made Branching Out using the same yarn so I printed the pattern off and just started knitting.
To be honest, this scarf isn’t really me. I decided I really wanted to use the yarn so just started knitting. It is a gorgeous scarf and a really wonderful pattern, but not my style. I followed the written instructions, rather than the chart because that was what I felt comfortable doing. I did 36 repeats of the pattern which yielded a scarf just over 70″. It is about 7″ wide too.
I learnt a new technique while knitting this scarf too. I learnt how to spit-splice. It was rather easy and such a convenient way of joining the 2 yarns. Especially as it wouldn’t been awkward to weave in any ends where there was a lacy part.
I also learnt that I can do lace. I made one tiny mistake throughout the whole pattern and since blocking it, I can’t find it anywhere.
This was also the first time I really did any serious blocking. This was what the lace pattern looked like before blocking and this is what it looked like close up after a good blocking. Blocking took about 24 hours and just pinning the scarf took 2 hours. The whole process added quite a lot to the final object.
For anyone who is a beginner in lace, I would highly recommend this project. It was a fun, easy knit (apart from the sl-2 k1 psso which was fiddly
) and the results are fantastic.
Now, I am *finally* knitting a clapotis. I have some wonderful cadenza yarn from Colinette
I love the way your scarf came out. Nice work on your fisr attempt at lace
I love the scarf, I did one in Tapestry too but a lighter colour, I think yours looks better. Looking forward to seeing the Clapotis!
Found you through the new SP12. I’m sooo excited about this round! Your Branching Out is beautiful!
