Pattern: Clapotis by Kate Gilbert, from knitty.com Autumn 2004
Yarn: Colinette Cadenza, Kingfisher colorway, 6 skeins
Needles: 5mm straights
I have to admit, this was a rather dull knit. The final object is absolutely wonderful. The dropped stitches make it look really elegant and I do love it. However, the mountain of stockinette stitch makes it one of the dullest knits I have ever endured. And it was endurance. I finished it last week, during my holidays, and I was willing the project to end. Like I have never willed anything to finish ever. But it’s now done. And I love it.
I made it exactly to the pattern and lightly blocked it at the end so that it ended up slightly more uniformed in shape and less curly at the edges. It wasn’t a massive block as I still wanted to keep the drape, and I feel I achieved a happy medium.
The yarn is 100% merino and a dream to knit with. I made my second pair of socks using this yarn and would use it again. It is soft and the colours are rather smooshy. I have some left over so am contemplating what to do with it. Due to pooling and slight colorway differences due to it being handpainted, the skeins were alternated every couple of rows. This was a wise decision, I feel, as it isn’t noticeable where the skeins change. And if I just knit one skein and went onto the next, the changeovers would be highly noticeable, methinks.
I won’t be knitting this pattern again (well, I reckon it would have to be rather amazing yarn and a large amount of money at the end of it) but I am pleased I am now one of the 5,000 people who have knit a clapotis. I shall wear it with pride.
I still LOVE lemonade, but now I like it with a little… you know… kick in it.
I’m one of the zillion that have a UFO clapotis! CONGRATS!
