The Importance of Dyelots

I have been rather busy the last few days making a baby blanket. It is rather stripy and is made of Sirdar Baby Bamboo, which, incidentally, I lovelovelove. It is one of the softest things I have ever used.
I came across a stumbling block, though. I ran out of yarn! Argh. And Niamh, my darling daughter, had played with the different labels so much that they had been thrown out ages ago as they had been all slobbered on. I didn’t think I would need more yarn. Double Argh!
So I decided to have a wee look on the internet to see what I could find. I wasn’t sure, but thought I could identify 2 of the colours. Darn. So, I trodded off to HobbyCraft, only to find that 2 of the colours were on sale! Score. But I couldn’t see the other 3. Bum.
Then I decided to go to the shop that I originally purchased the yarn from, with my samples in hand, looking for the 3 missing colours. I found 2. And then the 3rd was rather elusive. So I asked the kind gentleman and he matched it to his colour chart and said that it was definitely ‘Babe’. Yay! I ran home, well, drove home, with Niamh chatting away in the back, and went online at the first opportune moment and ordered some. But it just didn’t Look Right on the screen, so I ordered some other colours that it could’ve been. Yay.
Rather impatiently, I waited for the postman the next day to carry on with my blankie and he came rather promptly. I rushed to open the parcel and found the yarn. I was not impressed. None of them matched the colour I had already been using.
If you look closely, the original piece of yarn is ontop of the 4 balls that you see. None of them match.
The ‘Babe’ colourway was the closest, but it wasn’t right
So, I’ve had to refudge the blanket and have a large border round it. And it looks OK. I’m happy with it. I have now finished it, but not done a photoshoot, so you’ll have to wait.
Moral of the story? Make sure you have enough yarn for the project before you start. And, more importantly, don’t let your little ones chew on the labels until you are sure you know what they say. Ooops.
What a lovely, lovely little blanket! Perfect colors together, even if that one ‘afterthought’ shade was a bit off.
See, the TROUBLE with making sure you have enough yarn when you start something large like a blanket… is that once you’ve had an experience such as you just described, you buy a bit TOO much the next time, just in case… which means you have enough yarn for the project at hand, but then you have all that lovely leftover yarn just waiting to become something else… but then you don’t have quite enough yarn to make THAT thing, so you have to get MORE yarn… it’s an endless cycle. You should see my house because of it.
Hope you have a marvelous weekend!

You are absolutely right. For now, I have 4 colours of purply shades of baby bamboo that I won’t be using in this project and extra green and cream just lying around! Argh. Husband despairs
I’m sorry. Did you say something? I’m just in awe at your straight sides…………….
(Not Loch Awe…..)
Hehe, I am rather proud of my straight lines
